Discrete choice experiments were used to estimate the preferences of individuals for specific health outcomes. Binary logistic regression was used to estimate the parameters of a partial logit model to explain the variation in the individual preferences. A random sample of 3000 members of the New Zealand general public completed the survey. We included a series of hypothetical scenarios in which people were asked to state their preferred health outcome (specific health outcomes being assessed included: active and inactive life, death, mental health, and cancer; and chronic health conditions being assessed included: arthritis, diabetes, back pain, stroke and depression). The probability of preferring one health outcome over another was conditional on the other health outcomes. There was substantial variation in preferences for specific health outcomes among individuals. There was a high preference for both healthy and unhealthy life, and death. Preferences for other health outcomes were much lower, with the exception of mental health, which had a higher probability of being preferred. Preferences for some of the health outcomes were heterogeneous, indicating that individuals may value the same health outcome differently.
