The Way of All Flesh, by the late Donald Tyerman, has long been the most notorious (and
courageously fabled) of all the books put together by the much-traveled Englishman who was the deputy
home editor of The Times. It refers to all the works — legal, social, ecclesiastical, artistic, economic,
political and sentimental — of the British literary culture of the first half of the 20th century, and,
within this, it gives detailed accounts of the lives of people who might have had no other notable
function in the world, people who have been neglected by nearly everybody else. Tyerman’s title
refers to Samuel Butler’s 19th-century satire of Victorian and Edwardian society entitled The Way of
All Flesh. In this, and in many similar works, Butler both glorifies the genteel middle class and
ridicules it at the same time.
In 1950, Tyerman was working for the Times as home editor. His book was originally put together as a
series of articles in The Times Magazine. It is said to have taken him a whole year to write his
4,000-word article on the lives of the four “Great English Dramatists,” based in turn on the life of
Sir Henry Wood, where he recounts the early years of the actor, playwright and composer who
died in 1919. Subsequently, he had set himself a much wider task: to give an account of the lives of
5,000 “people of the 19th century and their ideas and influences on the 20th.” He spent six years
doing this.
In his book, Tyerman has put together not a single interview or biography, but a group of essays,
one to each of his 1,600-odd subjects. Each section of the book is written as a kind of mini-biography,
followed by an essay. The intent of this is to create a book on the lives of people who seem to have
made little mark or to have made an effect on the world that is much greater than they themselves
were ever capable of. There is, however, a second, and almost equally important, intent. This is to
put before the reader a picture of British literature as he saw it
