New features are added constantly, and some are presented as downloadable updates, although not all updates become available to all version. You can download updates directly from the Adobe web site.
What version of Photoshop you need depends on the type of image you’re going to edit and on your computer’s version of the program. You may have to upgrade from a lower version to get the features of the higher version.
Using the History Panel
The History Panel is a quick way to go back and forth between one edit and another. You can use the History Panel to back up and edit an image or to make repeated changes that are saved in the history.
To access the History Panel, choose History⇒History. You’ll see an overview of images that were recently processed. Figure 16-1 shows the window with the last few images displayed.

To view a previous image, double-click the image thumbnail, the ellipsis, or the thumbnail icon with the rainbow design. A window opens that contains the previous image. Figure 16-2 shows the History Panel with the previous image.

After you finish editing an image, you’ll see an image labeled “History.” You can double-click that image to undo your last edit. Or you can choose History⇒Undo, as shown in Figure 16-3.

Trimming nonessential or background information
If you want to drastically alter the colors in a photo, say, to make it look black-and-white, you can simply select the Background layer in the Layers palette, and then choose Filters⇒Adjustment⇒Desaturate.
However, if you want to limit what’s visible in a photo to what’s on the photo’s subject, you can crop the photo with an extra tool. Although the Crop tool is a part of the Standard toolbar, I suggest that you use the Quick Selection

Although Elements can import files from Photoshop, they cannot open the recent versions of Photoshop files.
If you want to open the highest-quality versions of your images for resizing and sharing on social media, you’ll need to upgrade to Adobe Photoshop CC.
If you have a license for the full version of Photoshop, Photoshop Elements will open Photoshop files directly. This means you can use the following third-party editing apps and explore the many features in the program.
How to open and edit images in Photoshop Elements
Opening images in Photoshop Elements is as easy as opening them in the full version of Photoshop. You just need to right-click the image in the file manager and choose “Open in Photoshop Elements.”
You can edit images in Photoshop Elements just as you would in the full version of Photoshop.
All of the controls are the same as in Photoshop, but a few are different. You can move the image around the canvas by clicking and dragging it, and you can zoom in and out by holding the Ctrl or Command (Mac) key and scrolling your mouse wheel or arrow keys.
In the Tool Options (Window | Preferences | General | Features) you can choose to have the Help button display a small red circle with an error sign when you hover over a command in the menu. You can also turn off the ability to navigate up and down the menus with the keyboard, and to scroll through layers with the mouse wheel.
How to save and export your images
To save an image in Photoshop Elements, you’ll need to save it as a new file. You’ll want to save it as a.PSD file, which is the native file format for Photoshop.
If you’re ready to export your images from Photoshop Elements, you’ll need to first save the image as a.PSD file. This will allow Photoshop Elements to export the image into a file you can use in other apps.
To save as a.PSD, right-click the image and choose “Save as.”
To export the image, open the File Manager, navigate to the folder where you want to export the image to, and then select the image from the file list.
If you’re exporting an image in Photoshop Elements, you’ll see the Export options at the bottom of the screen. Choose a location where you can find the file, and then click
