But man for a game that exudes a lot of promise and features so much ambition, there’s something missing… something that’s kind of gone unnoticed in many of the trailers and trailers of trailers for the game. It’s what’s missing from everything we’ve seen so far that is the game’s biggest problem.

Skyrim is the game that says, “We’re going to be the best of the best when it comes to player choice and character development.” So do they. Watch Dogs is the game that says, “We’re going to show you that you have to be a little more adaptable in a modern day city than you might have been in one from previous generations.” Do they. XCOM is the game that says, “We’re going to show you that you have to fight against many enemies, and not just one. You have to play smart, play fast, and never, ever get cocky.” Do they. All these games are experiments in new genres for the gaming medium, and all of them have done really well. What do they all have in common? Each one of them has a message of empowerment, and each one of them appeals to a certain sort of person.

The problem with the new fantasy action RPG Elden Ring, however, is that it’s something of an attempt to recreate these games for the modern market. It’s the same sort of deal-making as what we saw in The Witcher 3, or just as we saw in The Witcher 2 (or even in the old Elder Scrolls games). Elden Ring is a guy in a big coat who comes across as a little creepy, and his basic message of “It’s okay to be scared and it’s okay to make bold choices” is the same basic message of empowerment that we’ve seen done incredibly well a number of times.

Where Elden Ring goes wrong, however, is that it doesn’t do a good job of conveying this message. There’s a tremendous amount of potential here, but on the same level as how much potential you see in a game like Grand Theft Auto, the potential in Elden Ring often feels like it’s stuck way back at ground level, while the potential is entirely lost in the air.
