In order to overcome this problem, a double filter may be provided which uses two dielectric filter layers to achieve the desired effect. Another arrangement may be to utilize a filter having a black level of a given value on the high voltage side, while the filter may have a low black level or no black level on the low voltage side. This latter arrangement may be employed in connection with the anode or the grid of the cathode ray tube.
These arrangements, however, do not eliminate the problems in the prior art, such as hue shifts, and in some cases the effect is a reduction of the contrast rather than an increase of the black level.
Another problem with cathode ray tubes that have a black level adjustment is that the adjustment is normally made at the factory before the unit is shipped. The customer may choose to have the unit shipped either with the adjustment being at one level or another, or at no adjustment. Normally, it is not practical for the factory to change the adjustment after the tube has been assembled to the screen. Furthermore, in any case, it is expensive to produce or stock a variety of tubes, each with its own black level adjustment. In addition, most tube manufacturers do not wish to change the adjustment of their tubes.
A solution to this problem is to use a filter having a black level that is adjustable by the customer. This solution is found in the U.S. Pat. No. 4,187,547 to Crandell.
