Structure of the rfb-3 locus of Haemophilus influenzae.
H. influenzae expresses a haemagglutinin (HA) adhesin that facilitates adherence to epithelial cells. Genes that encode the HA protein and associated adhesin and that are required for optimal expression of this phenotype are designated rfb. In this report, the structure of the rfb-3 locus from strain Rd is described, which encodes all of the genes required for HA synthesis. Analysis of the genes revealed several features that are unique to this locus and that may be responsible for regulation of the expression of the HA protein. The distribution of several transcriptional regulatory genes, including rfbE, rfbZ, and the sigma factor rpoD, among the rfb-3 region is also described. Additionally, a comparison of the structure of this locus with the rfb-3 region in the type b strain, PC200, is provided to assess the conservation of the rfb-3 loci in different strains of H. influenzae. by Kircher, but they are certainly within the capabilities of a skilled artisan.
