# Know your computer graphics origins
Though the term “graphics” is often used to mean images or pictures, it actually has a more specific meaning in computer graphics.
“Graphics” can refer to the source or object from which a computer image is created. A computer image is the result of manipulating a graphic to create a new image. The raw source image is called the _graphic_, and the final image is the _graphic file_.
To be specific, you create computer graphics by manipulating raster images, or bitmapped images. You can draw and paint on a computer monitor or on paper, but a more common practice is to use raster files. Though I don’t particularly like the term _graphic_ because it implies that it’s something static, I use it in this book.

Over time, the operating system you use to access the software will change, but the installer will stay the same. If you used Windows 7 or 8 to access Photoshop before, it will download, install and run the software in the same way, on a new computer.
You can use your old Photoshop software licence to open images in Photoshop Elements, but you will not be able to edit files in the same way you were using Photoshop. You will need to purchase a new licence to use Photoshop Elements on a new computer.

Using Photoshop Elements
Open the program and select the image you want to work on.
You can find images in the following ways:
Lightroom
Most images saved as RAW files (for example, in Lightroom or Canon Camera Raw) are saved in the RAW (.CR2) format. The software should open the image and you should be able to open the image in Photoshop Elements.
Choosing a Save As option will not open the image in the same way as opening in Adobe Photoshop. However, you can still change the file format to the file type that Adobe Photoshop Elements uses.
When Photoshop Elements opens the image, it will tell you what the preview quality is and what the quality of the image will be after you work. You can set the preview quality before you save the file.
To open the image in Photoshop Elements, click on the image.
Click on Save.
Click on Save As and then select Photoshop Elements File (. eps).
Photoshop Elements will save the image in the same format as it would for the original image in Adobe Photoshop, and the image will open in the same way that it would in Adobe Photoshop.
You can use the Quality Settings dialog box to set the quality of your image at any time. For example, you can increase the contrast by clicking on the radio button on the left and changing the value in the box that appears.
You can change the amount of unwanted noise in the image using the Noise slider.
