Getting Your Feet Wet with Photoshop

This book is designed to take you by the hand and teach you how to use Photoshop — specifically, Photoshop Elements. But before we delve into more advanced features, we first want to walk you through the basics of image editing.

Read this section to familiarize yourself with the basic tools and components used in editing an image. We start with a walk-through of the workspace to show you how a layer-based file is organized and what the various editing tools can be used for.

Figuring Out the Workspace

Photoshop has a workspace that enables you to organize the layers and various elements of your image or file. The workspace can include any number of layers (files) arranged on their own area of the screen. Figure 10-1 illustrates an example of a workspace.

Photoshop is a versatile tool that enables you to manipulate many different features of images, including sharpening, cropping, resizing, and more. To perform these more advanced editing tasks, the various tools and features of Photoshop must be accessed. Because this section just covers a basic walk-through of the tools in Photoshop, we don’t discuss advanced editing tools or features, but you can find out about these tools in the free After Effects tutorials found in the DVD included with the software and online at `www.straightenershow.com`.

Take a look at the left side of Figure 10-1, where you can see layers and various components of the Photoshop document. The right side of Figure 10-1 shows the Layers panel where you can arrange and rearrange your layers.

Working with Layers

Layers are transparent masks that display underneath other layers. When you edit or crop an image, the layer below it is always visible through the layer that you are working on. In addition, the layer above the layer you’re working on remains visible but is transparent and transparent.

A layer, shown in Figure 10-1, is an area on your image where you can place and format text, an image, or a graphic.

Installing Photoshop Elements

The program is already installed on a PC, so you can skip this step.

Download the latest version of Photoshop Elements (0.21.0 or later).

Open Photoshop Elements.

Click the Sign In tab.

Enter your Adobe ID and Password.

Click Sign In.

Click the Install button.

Enter a location to store program files and other preferences.

Click OK.

Check the box beside Program Files:

Click OK.

Click the Activate button.

Click OK.

The license agreement page will appear.

Accept the license and click the Next button.

Start the download and installation of the program.

Follow the instructions on the screen.

Click Continue.

Click the Create shortcut on your desktop

Click Continue.

Click the Create button.

After the installation is complete, you can start Photoshop Elements from the desktop icon.

To start Photoshop Elements:

Click the Photoshop Elements icon on the desktop.

Enter a name for the program.

Click the Start button to start the program.

How to Use Photoshop Elements

The interface of Photoshop Elements is very similar to that of Adobe Photoshop.

You can use the following steps to change the settings of Photoshop Elements:

Open a new image.

Click the Edit tab.

Click Adjustments.

Adjust the levels of the image.

Add an Alpha channel.

Add a mask.

Adjust a color layer.

Add a toning effect.

Adjust a Smart Toning effect.

Add a filter.

Crop an image.

Adjust the size of the image.

Set a crop area.

Zoom in or out of an image.

Rotate an image.

Save an image.

Save a JPEG file.

Open a RAW file.

Adjust an image.

Correct Lens Distortion.

Adjust the sharpness.

Select the Color Range tool.

Select a color group.
