Saving picture files

The quantitative analysis of drug-like molecules such as cytokines, biological response modifiers and neurotransmitters in human blood or in other biological fluids by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is an integral part of drug discovery and development. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is a separation technique by which drugs are separated from one another in the presence of a mobile phase.
HPLC is a versatile analytical method, available in a large number of different forms, and capable of performing a variety of different separation tasks. The number and choice of the proper method for the particular task depend on the separation technique, the separation conditions including the type and ratio of the organic solvents in the mobile phase, the sample volume, the detection employed and the purpose of the separation (e.g., pharmacokinetic, biological assay).
The current preferred mode of HPLC separation is based on reverse-phase chromatography using C18-bonded silica or Zorbax columns and mobile phases containing acetonitrile and water or buffer. More recently, the use of hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC) has become more prevalent in the pharmaceutical industry.
A validated and cost effective HPLC method is necessary for a number of applications in pharmaceutical drug development, bioanalysis and quality control. Quantification of analytes in a sample is most commonly achieved by either an online detector, such as a diode array detector, coupled to an HPLC system, or a mass spectrometry (MS) detector.
