on ubuntu server, when I upload a pic, I select a file that uses the format (.PNG,.JPG,.JPEG).
My question is, do I need to make a php extension for the server to be able to interpret the file type?
I would like the filename be something like image1.jpg
edit : the official answer from my hosting provider is no. Apparently when I did a ‘file -i image1.jpeg’ it returned a ‘imagejpeg’ extension.

There are many extensions that let you assign different extensions for a given file. The most common ones are:
jpg – for jpeg files
jpeg – for jpeg files
jpg_or_jpeg – for jpeg or jpg files
png – for png files
jpe_or_png – for png files or jpg files
etc…
These extensions are valid for most image upload systems such as PHP, GD, ImageMagick and FastCGI.
It is possible to have a separate set of extensions for certain image formats, but this is not generally recommended.
