    A new research paper published by scientists at Arizona State University suggests that there is a “missing link” between the emergence of the modern human lineage and the arrival of the first modern human populations out of Africa.

    The study “Multiregional origins of anatomically modern humans revealed by six loci”, investigates the multiregional origin of the early modern human (EHMI) lineage, which originated in East Africa around 50,000 years ago and diversified into groups spreading out into other parts of the world during the subsequent millennia.

    In our recent study, we used four ancient human DNA fragments, including one in particular that came from a tiny piece of bone that was discovered in an Indonesian cave, to analyse this small group of intrepid ancestors.

    We sequenced this ancient DNA fragment, which we call the Aquatic gene (ADCY13), in 956 people from around the world and found that they shared a common lineage that originated in Africa. However, we also found that the group of individuals within this ancestral group that traced to this cave in Indonesia could be split into two distinct lineages, we call them the EHMI-Indo-Pacific (EIP) lineage and a group of individuals who have no genetic link to the group of ancient Indonesian ancestors we published in 2015.

    This new result suggests that a group of modern humans may have had a very limited “out of Africa” settlement that occurred tens or even hundreds of thousands of years before the EHMI lineage diversified further into diverse populations around the globe.

    We looked at other ancient DNA fragments from both early hominins and modern humans and find a similar pattern of numerous ancient genomes that can be split into several subgroups (represented by the EHMI lineage) and a smaller group that only
